Blog 4

This course has gone very well for me and I have learned some new concepts. The course was easy to follow and everyone was very helpful.

The main thing I have learned through this course is the whole idea of using a Wiki space. I had used one very briefly in the past, but this class definitely took it to a new level. It has also shown a new window into technology that is user friendly not only for myself, but for elementary aged students. I definitely would like to show my colleagues how to use a wiki.

I will definitely show my students how to navigate through a wiki and this will be a great technology tool to use in the classroom. I would like to use a wiki for different units keeping them simple and fun.

If I could give another student advice about this course I would tell them pace yourself and stay on top of things. If you find the pace that works best for you, then you will be successful. There is enough time each week for you to work at a steady pace. Also, stay on top of things. In an online setting staying on top of things will help you greatly. I would not wait until the last minute to get things done. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, someone is always willing to help and often you can learn from your peers. Use the wiki space course as a guideline for your own course. There are many great tools on the wiki as well.

Reflection 3

I continue to learn more and more each week. The newest item I have learned how to do is a Yodio. It took a little navigating to figure out, but eventually did. I am also learning about podcasts at this time as I prepare to make one for my own online course. The most important thing for me to remember is how the information affects the students that will be taking this course. I need to deliver the information in a way that reaches all learners.

This week we are focusing on a discussion and lecturette. I decided to keep the discussion simple as my course targets second graders. I find simplicity at this age level is most effective. With my lecturette I am going to make a podcast. This gives students the opportunity to hear my voice instead of always reading what is expected.

I know from this course putting a voice with someone makes it much more personal. I want to be able to pass that same idea on to my students. I continue to have a positive attitude as the course is coming to an end and have learned some new things. I know I must maintain patience especially when working with technology because it can be your best friend at times or not. This will always be the way it is with technology whether it is tomorrow or ten years from now.

Reflection 2

C&I 438 has given me some insight to online courses a little different then the past two courses I have taken.

I visualized a course through Black board and was surprised when it was going to be through a wiki. I am glad it was through a wiki especially now that I am creating my own Wiki. I don’t think I would have done as well creating my own Wiki. I was also feeling a little overwhelmed at the start of the course because I was not sure what to expect. I think that comes with each course you take though. However, I am making my way through the course and am feeling pretty good about it.

At the beginning I was very timid about asking questions because I didn’t know how my peers would react. That has since changed and has eased my mind or fear of asking questions. Everyone is so helpful to one another. This has helped me maintain a good attitude throughout and given me some confidence. Another concept/skill I have learned through this course is Tweet deck. I was not familiar with this program before and am continuing to become familiar with it. Tweet deck provides a vast amount of information.

Before starting this course I was familiar with Wiki spaces. However, I have gone much more in detail with the Wiki since this course has begun. I would like to continue becoming more familiar with Wiki spaces and make a successful Wiki space upon completion of this course. I was also familiar with Twitter, but would also like to continue learning about Twitter and Tweet deck and use it not only for social purposes, but also educationally. It is a very useful tool.

This course has given many new insights to online learning. I now know the amount of information that is on the web including blogs, wiki spaces, tweet deck, and many more. These tools are easy to use and are easy to remember and follow.

Quiz Reflection

After analyzing my answers from the two quizzes I took, I think I am okay with being an online student as well as an online teacher. I am pretty familiar with technology and have access to most things asked in both quizzes. There are also many things out on the web that are unfamiliar or new to me. I must say as a student at times, I can become frustrated with an online class only because technology doesn’t always work to my benefit. I also know that this unfamiliarity will help me in the learning process. This is effective in the teaching world, as I learn my students will learn as well. Online education is a different perspective of learning and thinking “outside the box”. I find myself drawn to these ideas as students learn from those “outside the box” experiences.

As a teacher, this will be somewhat new to me as I journey my way through making this online course. I think I hope to complete this course thoroughly as  I have started working my way through it. I am definitely learning new things along the way, and have especially hit the back/edit button hundreds of times. If I can be open to learning and my students are able to see that, then they will feel much more comfortable in the learning process as well.
